What is the Gospel of the Kingdom?

Written by: Richard Greene

The word “gospel” means “good news”.

The kingdom of God refers to the rule of God which comes through the life of Jesus Christ in us as we are filled with and led by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the gospel of the kingdom is the good news of God’s rule.

God’s rule is good news because through it we are saved and receive righteousness, joy, and peace in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17).The Apostle Paul wrote, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greeks” (Romans 1:16). The message of the good news of God’s rule is the power of God through which we can be saved.

But what is that message?

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 says that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and raised from the dead. It says all of this happened according to the plan and purpose of God. When we truly believe that message, not only in our minds but also in our hearts, the Holy Spirit will lead us to repent of our sins and trust in Christ alone for our salvation. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16). To believe in the gospel of the kingdom is to believe in Jesus, trusting Him alone for my salvation. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26).

Believing is also called faith.

Faith is more than simply agreeing that something is true. It is receiving freely what God has done through the Lord Jesus Christ. “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). Salvation is the free gift of God (Romans 3:23) and not the result of our own good works or effort.

A gift must be freely received and cannot be earned. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:12-13). Believe the gospel of the kingdom – the good news of God’s rule – and by faith receive God’s gift of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved. In Jesus’ name!
